Health Care Symposium

Silco Theater
Silver City, NM / 25 August 2007

Health Care is heating up again as Michael Moore's new film, Sicko, puts a candle under the keesters of the corporate thugs running the medical industrial complex and presidential candidates and state officials lining their pockets with lobbyist largesse.  Gov Richardson has now ignored his own study's conclusion - that The Health Security for New Mexicans plan gives the best coverage at the least cost.

Health Security for New Mexicans

Silver City residents gathered at the Silco Theater on a Saturday afternoon to be updated on the Health Security for New Mexicans Campaign by Gayle Simmons of Unitarian Universalists and Dr Neal Apple, a long time proponent of the HSNM plan.  A primary purpose of this meeting is to inform and gather "warm bodies" for the upcoming

Public Input Meeting

New Mexico health activists have been working for sixteen years to get the moribund state government to enact a health care bill to provide universal coverage, a single payer, price controls, elimination of multiple layers of bureaucracy and millions in fat cat salaries at the lowest cost to resident taxpayers and the highest quality of service.  Each legislative defeat and executive kibosh has made proponents more determined and the proposed plan more inarguable.

In the recent legislative session, the pall of Governor Richardson's disapproval of any plan that eliminated the parasitic private insurance industry hung over all while he chimed in the voice of reason that no legislative action should be taken until his study - by Princeton, NJ based Mathmatica Policy Research - was completed.

Surprise!  MPR concluded that HSNM's plan provided the best coverage (roughly equivalent to state employees benefits) at the least cost, both initially and after a 5 year burn in period.

The governor's political maneuvering to derail the effort in the current 60 day session was doubly injurious to New Mexicans as it becomes a Hurculean task to get a complex - though very well researched and written - piece of legislation through the short 30 day session in 2008.  How many New Mexicans will fall ill during that time and suffer or die while Richardson, Altamirano and others beholden to special interests continue to line their pockets?  Is murder too strong a word?  What word do you use to describe when deliberate actions result in the death of an innocent party?  Those denied health care that die will be just as dead as if a gun was placed to their head.

I have never heard the words "constitutional crisis" used as often as during the current regime of George Bush.  One of his primary impeachable offenses is violation of international treaties and agreements to which the United States is signatory.  These treaties are, per Article 6 of the US Constitution, the "...supreme law of the land..."

Among the agreements to which the United States is signatory is the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  This was adopted in 1948 without dissent by the entire General Assembly of the United Nations - virtually every country that existed at the time.  Article 25 reads...

(1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.

(2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.

Every office holder, great or small, that swears an oath to uphold the constitution should read article 6 very carefully.  Health Care is a Human Right and the supreme Law of the Land.  Avaricious profitability by predatory private interests is not.  Get it?
