The Town & Gown is a tardy response to WNMU's
notorious lack of communication and indifference to community
concerns. Arts & Culture are great but criticism from outside
accreditation sources are believed to have prompted their recent charm
offensive.
The elusive Dr Counts was nowhere in sight on
this occasion - thank Heavens for small blessings. The single agenda
item - discussion of a competitive proposal to be submitted to the
state to have Silver City designated as one of two Arts & Culture
districts in a new pilot program - proceeded smoothly thanks to a lack
of the usual pumping of political hot air.
Though unfunded as yet and assuming Silver City
wins the competition, the proposal wold bring funding under the
rational that arts, culture, and related tourism can be the basis of
economic development. It would also double the NM tax break to
for those remodeling houses in the historic district according to their
guidelines... handy for those with enough income to make use of a
$50,000 tax break. For the poor slumphs slinging hash and making
the deliveries, there's even a suggestion of low cost "workforce
housing." That's what I want to be when I grow up... a workforce!
