Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in
Space
The World
Peace Forum
met in June 2006 in Vancouver, Canada. It brought together
activists, delegates, speakers, and artists from over 90 countries in a
six-day program intent upon creating and reinforcing the elements for a
global culture of peace.
Global
Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in
Space is an international organization of activists, scientists,
and engineers opposing the rapidly accelerating weaponization of space
and the dangerous expansion of nuclear power into earth orbit.
The participants present the current and
intended development of US space weapons and the aggressive and
offensive nature of US policy initiated in the Reagan Star Wars era,
continued by every president since - Democrat or Republican - and now
reaching a critical mass with astronomical risk of catastrophic
consequences.
Further, they present alternatives redefining
space policy, diplomacy and conversion of weapons development to a
global effort to provide clean, safe renewable energy, environmental
protection, and proactive responses to impending climate change as well
as the range of social justice issues including health care, education
and poverty.
United
States space policy clearly states an intent to control space and
deny access to it by anyone it percieves to be a threat or simply
"hostile to US national inyterests." The Bush administration's
obvious disdain for international law, organizations and treaties to
which it is a signatory, such as the ABM, NPT, Geneva Conventions,
United Nations, World Court, etc, confirms the US intent. The
recent brinksmanship with Russia over the development and placement of
ABM systems on their borders removes any reasonable doubt that the US
intends to deploy offensive weapons in space, thereby provoking a new
arms race to the detriment of our own, not to mention international,
security and the peril of humanity.
