Larry Sullivan is president of the Southwest Chapter of the
New Mexico American Civil Liberties Union covering Grant, Catron,
Hidalgo, and Luna counties. We discuss ACLU's never ending
struggle to protect our freedoms while facing an increasing assault on
the constitution and Bill of Rights.
The American Civil Liberties Union is our nation's guardian of
liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to
defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the
Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this
country.
"So long as we have enough people in this country willing to
fight for
their rights, we'll be called a democracy," ACLU Founder Roger Baldwin
said.
Larry Michael Sullivan has
bachelor of science and master of science degrees from the University
of Tennessee at Knoxville. He was inducted into Alpha Xi chapter of Pi
Lambda Theta, national honor fraternity. He is a graduate of the
Institute for Administrative Justice at McGeorge School of Law.
He spent eight years writing under the pen-name, memphis
slim, for the Free Venice Beachhead in Venice, California
and the Great Speckled Bird in Atlanta, Georgia. These were two
of the best of the alternative weeklies of the era.
He is author of the short story, Revenge, in Key West
and Beyond, published by the Key West Writers Guild, and Raising
Mama, a memoir. Sullivan has published poetry in English and
Spanish.
A retired civil servant, he and his wife, the former Kathryn
Sue Curry, a noted artist, live in southwest New Mexico and have
numerous grandchildren. Mr. Sullivan’s heroes are his mother, Wilma
Mankiller, Cherokee chief, Simone de Beauvoir, French intellect, and
Clarence Darrow, lawyer and founder of the American Civil Liberties
Union.
