Health Security for New Mexicans
legislation is a now before the NM House and Senate. If you want
universal health coverage in New Mexico, ACT NOW! by calling and wrtiting your legislators.
This is a bold initiative to wrest control of NM
health care from private insurers and medical corporations and
establish a single payer system that eliminates the top heavy and
overpaid management, redundant and inefficient administration, and
costly, conflicting and confusing paperwork that is driving costs
skyward while providing coverage to all New Mexicans at less cost and
with no additional taxes.
Gayle SImmons and Carley Preusch
discuss this issue along with others that give real world perspective
on the difficulties NM citizens face. We examine the program's
merits and their efforts as members of the Unitarian Universalist
Church to bring social justice to NM's health care system.
The United States spends twice as much
per
person on health care as any other country in the world while
ranking 37th in the quality of care and providing no health
care coverage to almost 50 million of its citizens.
In New Mexico, we have the 2nd
hightest rate of uninsured citizens in the nation . This has
SURGED to over 20% while private insurance continues on a
rising curve as costs for health care grudgingly provided to the
uninsured increase premiums for those that are covered - a vicious
cycle.
Further, those in the middle that have
employment
and some financial resources, but cannot maintain the rising premiums,
play Russian Roulette with their financial security knowing
that their life savings could evaporate if they or a family member were
to face a serious long term illness without coverage.
You might ask where the money goes if the
US spends double what other industrialized coutries spend with such
poor results. Insurance companies, Big Pharma, and a
calcifying culture of cost+ pricing policies - where medical
industry corporate profits are a guaranteed percentage on top of the
money spent and there is little oversight, cost control, or incentives
for efficiency - continue to drive costs through the roof.
