Not long ago a few concerned citizens in a lillte NM village
had an idea... "Why not start a
library, right here in beautiful downtown Gila?"
Thanks to a bit of inspiration and countless volunteer hours
by a cross section of this rural community, Gila Valley Library has
come to be. GVL is located in a portion of the much loved Gila
Community Center and at about 400 square feet - it's the best little
library, pound for pound in the southwest.
It offers fiction, non-fiction, short stories, biography,
reference, children's books and a summer reading program, audio books,
videos, music CDs, computers with internet access, a paperback
exchange, and a growing section on the history and lore of the
Southwest. A grant here, a yard sale there, and the selfless
volunteering of the local supporters makes it all happen.
Phyllis Reiche is one of the founders and current board of
trustees chair. We discuss the library's genesis, services, and
vision for the future.
