NM Repeal, based in Santa Fe, seeks to have
legislation enacted to repeal the death penalty in New Mexico. We
speak with NM Repeal Director Kathleen MacRae and Marie Ellis of
Albuquerque, who opposes the death penalty despite the tragic loss of
her son as a murder victim.
The New Mexico Coalition to Repeal the Death Penalty is a
nonprofit alliance of organizations and individuals committed to
complete repeal of the death penalty. We provide accurate information,
advocate meaningful public policy and mobilize others who share our
goals. We also work to educate New Mexico citizens, elected officials
and community leaders about the facts of the death penalty.
Death Penalty:
The death penalty is the ultimate denial of civil liberties. In the
past 30 years, 123 inmates were found to be innocent and released from
death row.
From an address
by Gov Ryan of Illinois 3 June 2002 at a
Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life event at
University of Chicago Divinity School
When the thirteenth inmate was exonerated,
I did the only thing I could do,
the only thing any governor could do -
I halted executions.
